Lilacs: the sweet, pleasant scent of springtime and the colour of rebirth. I have loved the lilac since I was a boy. My childhood house had a large front yard with two rows of lilac bushes which produced flowers from white through dark purple. My mother enjoyed the scent of them and during the spring we would cut fresh lilacs flowers for her daily. Every year I look forward to the 2-3 weeks that the lilacs are in bloom, and to this day I continue to enhance my home with their presence. It’s a very happy memory for me that I relive each spring.
Purple is also the colour of my alma mater, The University of Western Ontario. My university leather jacket was royal purple and I have a special place in my heart for my school and it’s colours. Again, these are very pleasant and cherished memories for me.
This series will be a play of purples and blues with the feelings of springtime.
This small painting is an experiment in colour, and is a preamble for a series of large abstract paintings.
This painting comes framed and can be hung in whatever orientation that you choose. The image will appear differently depending on which way that you hang it. Consider the image as I display it, then rotate 90 degrees and look at it again. Find the orientation that speaks to you. This is part of the joy of abstract painting.
