Snow Day

Many of us who grew up in a cold snowy landscape often often experienced snow days: days where the school is closed, or the bus runs are stopped due to a heavy snow fall. It was a day where kids had nothing to do, no responsibilities and we got to stay home and play in the snow or play video games inside the house.

My sister and I used to sit in the kitchen listening to the radio for the bus announcements. The radio station would list the bus numbers that were cancelled for the day. I remember those days well, and the incredible joy that came hearing our bus number read aloud. No school - just run outside and play all day in the glorious snow! It’s a very good childhood memory that many in Canada, and I would assume most northern countries share.

The last snow day I had was in 1992 during my first year in university. I had an 8 am class, and I lived in residence on campus. A huge snowstorm swept thru southern Ontario and closed both my alma matter - The University of Western Ontario - as well as a few other universities in surrounding towns. I remember walking to class as the snow fell calmly. Western is in London, Ontario, and as expected, it looks like a small British campus. Our colours at Western are royal purple and silver, and I can still see the purple of my school jacket, the clean white snow and the gray of the old British architecture of Middlesex College. Class went on for about an hour when a janitor came into the room, who was surprised at our presence and told us that the school was closed for the day. I went back to Delaware Hall, napped and played in the snow. It was a lot of fun, and throwback to my youth.

Small abstract work on paper, framed and ready to hang.

Small paper work that can be hung in whatever orientation that you choose. Image will appear differently depending on which way that you hang it. Consider the image as I display it, then rotate 90 degrees and look at it again. Find the orientation that speaks to you. This is part of the joy of abstract painting.

My signature appears on the front of the work and my Certificate of Authenticity is included.
